Here is a command line to run on your server if you think your server is under attack. It prints our a list of open connections to your server and sorts them by ammount.

RedHat: netstat -ntu | awk ‘{print $5}’ | cut -d: -f1 | sort | uniq -c | sort -n

BSD: netstat -na |awk ‘{print $5}’ |cut -d “.” -f1,2,3,4 |sort |uniq -c |sort -n

You can also check for connections by running the following command.
netstat -plan | grep :80 | awk ‘{print $4 }’ | sort -n | uniq -c | sort

These are few step to be taken when you feel the server is under attack:
——————————————————————————-
Step 1: Check the load using the command “w”.
Step 2: Check which service is utilizing maximum CPU by “nice top”.
Step 3: Check which IP is taking maximum connection by netstat -anpl|grep :80|awk {‘print $5′}|cut -d”:” -f1|sort|uniq -c|sort -n
Step 4: Then block the IP using firewall (APF or iptables “apf -d < IP>” )
——————————————————————————-

You can also implement security features in your server like:

1) Install apache modules like mod_dosevasive and mod_security in your server.
2) Configure APF and IPTABLES to reduce the DDOS
3) Basic server securing steps :
===============================

http://www.linuxdevcenter.com/pub/a/linux/2006/03/23/secure-your-server.html?page=1

===============================
4) Configure sysctl parameters in your server to drop attacks.

You can block the IP which is attacking your server using Ipsec from command prompt.
=========
>> netsh ipsec static add filterlist name=myfilterlist
>> netsh ipsec static add filter filterlist=myfilterlist srcaddr=a.b.c.d dstaddr=Me
>> netsh ipsec static add filteraction name=myaction action=block
>> netsh ipsec static add policy name=mypolicy assign=yes
>> netsh ipsec static add rule name=myrule policy=mypolicy filterlist=myfilterlist filteraction=myaction
========

From Brazil’s famous Copacabana beach to olde-worlde Europe, this is where the parties are!

Break out the party favours and the bubbly it’s almost time to ring in the New Year. To avoid another night in with the television, the website AskMen.com offers its top 10 list of New Year’s destinations for travellers keen to find fun out of town.

1. Copacabana Beach, Rio de Janeiro

As something memorable, a New Year’s Eve beach party in Brazil is hard to beat. Beautiful people, fireworks, a carnival atmosphere, an incredible setting on the most famous beach in the world, and you have all the ingredients you need to have the most incredible New Year’s experience of your life. Known locally as “Reveillon,” the entire beach turns into an all-day party, with several musical stages, dancing, and everyone dressed in white (it’s tradition). Over two million people turn up along the four km of sand, making this the ultimate New Year’s party, which you simply mustn’t miss.

2. Times Square, New York City
Of course, this is the most famous New Year’s Eve event in the world. The big ball descending in Times Square is watched by a million people in the flesh, and a billion more around the world. Star-studded musical performances, pyrotechnics and myriad bars and clubs in close proximity make this as big a party as they come. It is so firmly etched into popular culture that many people feel it is something which has to be experienced at least once in your life. Times Square is always throbbing with energy, and on New Year’s Eve it could power the entire Eastern seaboard.

3. Sydney Harbour, Sydney, Australia
As one of the first major cities to celebrate New Year’s Eve, Sydney ensures that the rest of the world has a tough act to follow. With a midnight fireworks display witnessed all around the world, the “Harbour of Light” parade and plenty of drinking establishments combine to make this a world famous event. It starts at 1 pm, with the first firing of the harbour cannon, and goes on into the early hours of January 1. Over a million people are expected to attend this year, and given it is summer in Sydney, you won’t have to wrap up to stay warm.

4. Frenchmen Street, New Orleans
Forget Bourbon Street — New Orleans locals head to Frenchmen Street when they want to party. Frenchmen Street has a much more bohemian quality than what we’ve seen so far, and is famed for its bars and cafes filled with great musicians and bands. Expect dancing in the street, impromptu brass bands parading through, lots of drinking, and it being New Orleans, you’ll probably see a few eccentric costumes, too.

5. The Brandenburg Gate, Berlin
If Paris and London are the refined parents at New Year’s Eve, then Berlin is the drunken uncle. Over a million people gather for this overwhelming celebration, with a massive fireworks display, music, dancing, light shows, international food stands, and beer tents. Behind the Brandenburg Gate is the “Party Mile.” The name says it all. Strasse des 17th Juni (17th June Street) turns into one huge open-air disco, replete with international DJs, laser and light shows and performing artists. It’s also open-ended, so no matter how big a party animal you are, there will be someone there to party with.

6. Shibuya, Tokyo
As the heart of the entertainment district, Shibuya is unquestionably the party heartland of Tokyo. With a traditional countdown outside the train station (so you know it will be on time) you are within walking distance of a myriad of bars and clubs in the area — in particular, check out Center Gai, which is the birthplace of many of the fashion trends of Japan’s young people. For a more traditional Japanese New Year, check out the shrine of Meiji Jingu, where thousands of Tokyo residents gather at New Year’s Eve. It’s within walking distance, or a short train ride, of Shibuya.

7. London Eye fireworks display, London
Almost one million people attended last year’s fireworks display, which was watched by millions more via television globally. And where better to spend New Year than London, home of Greenwich Mean Time, and therefore the epicenter of international timekeeping. As the main event in a city which has hundreds of New Year’s celebrations to choose from, we felt the London Eye was the place to be. With so many people gathering in one place after a few hours of drinking, you can guarantee an electric atmosphere and the sort of amicability which means you can start chatting to a beautiful stranger and see where the night takes you.

8. Central World or Sanam Luang, Bangkok
If you want to discover how a New Year’s party is thrown in Asia, this is a pretty good place to be with friends. Bangkok is unique, as it celebrates New Year three times every year between January and April — Western, Chinese and Thai. Central World explodes with concerts, food stalls and beer gardens, while Sanam Luang, located opposite the Grand Palace, has an authentically Thai experience with traditional food, music and dancers. Whichever location you choose, you are guaranteed a memorable experience.

9. Champs-Elysees, Paris
From around 9 pm, this is the place to be in Paris. People flock from across France bringing drinks with them. From here, you can get a great view of the Eiffel Tower being turned into a giant pyrotechnic display, as well as the inevitable fireworks show. With an atmosphere described as “bon enfant” (harmless) it’s going to be a typically refined celebration by the French. It may lack the unadulterated hedonism of Las Vegas, but if there is a more romantic and refined way to celebrate the new year with thousands of other people, we couldn’t find it.

10. Las Vegas Strip, Las Vegas
Sin City gets just a little bit more debauched (if that were possible) as the strip is pedestrianized for a massive party, complete with fireworks, sound and light shows, and more clubs than you could visit in a dozen trips. Hundreds of thousands of revellers turn up in the evening, and you can be sure the party is going to get a little crazy — it isn’t called Sin City for nothing. At midnight, a massive fireworks display will grab your attention.

In recent years its benefits as a blood-thinning drug have led to it being prescribed in low doses of around 50mg to reduce deaths from stroke and heart attack. There were also hints that aspirin may help prevent some cancers. But these were mostly based on observational studies, which can be misleading.

The gold standard of scientific evidence is the randomised controlled trial, preferably one with a lot of people and held over a long time. The results of just such a trial, published in the Lancet, suggest that aspirin is indeed an astonishing drug. Peter Rothwell at the John Radcliffe Hospital in Oxford and his colleagues looked at deaths due to cancers during and after randomised trials of daily aspirin. The trials had actually been started to look at how useful aspirin was for preventing heart attacks and strokes. Nevertheless, the data from the 25,570 patients enrolled in eight trials was also revealing about cancer.

In trials lasting between four and eight years, the patients who had been given aspirin were 21% less likely to die from cancer than those who had been given a placebo. These results were based on 674 cancer deaths, so are unlikely to represent the kind of statistical oddity that can beset studies on cancer risks that sometimes create headlines.

The benefits of aspirin were also apparent many years after the trials had ended. After five years, death rates for all cancers fell by 35% and for gastrointestinal cancers by 54%. A long-term follow-up of patients showed that the 20-year risk of cancer death remained 20% lower in those who had taken aspirin.

The study revealed that the effect takes time to accrue, so aspirin must be taken over a long period. The latent period for improving oesophageal, pancreatic, brain and lung cancer was about five years of aspirin taken on a daily basis. For stomach and colorectal cancer, the effects took ten years and for prostate cancer about 15 years. The means by which aspirin prevents cancer is not well understood. It is believed that it inhibits an enzyme that promotes cell proliferation in tumours.

The researchers also found that small daily doses of aspirin were enough, and that taking more than 75mg conferred no additional benefits. Those starting on aspirin in their late 40s or 50s benefit most.

Current guidelines on using aspirin for reducing the chances of a stroke or heart attack rightly warn of the small risk of ulcers and of dangerous bleeding in the stomach. These guidelines will probably have to be revised given the new findings. However, it remains unlikely that popping aspirin will be recommended for everyone like a vitamin supplement.

Aspirin is a highly cost-effective treatment: taking it for five to ten years easily beats initiatives to screen for breast and prostate cancers. To put it another way, ask yourself what a pharmaceuticals firm might charge for a drug that would reduce the chance of death by cancer by 20% – and then note that 100 days’ supply of low-dose aspirin can cost less than a dollar. By anyone’s measure, that is a bargain.

Hitachi develops new hard drive head technology that will increase storage capacity to 4TB by 2011

Hitachi recently announced that it has achieved a breakthrough in hard drive read-head design.

This breakthrough has produced read-heads in the 30-50 nanometer range, approximately 2,000 times smaller than the width of an average human hair. This new technology is called current perpendicular-to-the-plane giant magnetoresistive heads.

Giant magnetoresistance principles won scientists Albert Fert and Peter Grunberg the 2007 Nobel Prize for Physics.

These new heads will allow Hitachi to expand storage capacity in standard 3.5-inch desktop hard drives to 4TB and extend 2.5-inch laptop hard drives to 1TB of capacity. Hitachi says that it plans to integrate these new heads into hard drives starting in 2009 and that the technology will reach maturity in 2011.

The first products to reach market in 2009 will use recording heads of 50nm and products with recording heads of 30nm will hit market in 2011. Hitachi representatives believe the new heads will allow for storage densities of up to 500GB per square inch. The current highest capacity drives from Hitachi can only pack in 200GB per square inch.

Another benefit of the significantly smaller heads is that the hard drives will product less noise. Test products using 50nm heads produced 40dB of sound while the 30nm heads produced 30dB. Large capacity hard drives that produce less noise will be a welcome addition to digital video recorders.

Indian children sit in formation as they depict India’s national flag at the Red Fort to celebrate India’s Independence Day, in New Delhi, India, Sunday. Until recently, flying India’s flag was only legally allowed twice a year.

Until recent years, Indian citizens could fly their flag only on two days: Republic Day (Jan. 26) and today’s holiday, Independence Day. That changed after an Indian studying in Dallas saw Americans proudly waving Ol’ Glory six ways from Sunday.

Naveen Jindal returned to India to take over his father’s steel factory. Inspired by the Americans, he started running the tricolor Indian flag up the factory pole every day until a visiting bureaucrat said he was violating the Flag Code. Mr. Jindal headed to court.

In Indian history, Jindal says, “the flag always belonged to the ruler, never to the people. When we got independence, the flag became a government flag” to be flown by officials.

The government argued that if ordinary citizens were allowed to always fly the flag, they might not take proper care of it. But also, says Jindal, these officials wanted to preserve the flag as their own status symbol. As a result, India was missing out on a chance to rally diverse citizens around a still-young nation, he says.

“When a person displays a national flag, then they rise above their political, regional, or caste affiliations,” says Jindal, now a Member of Parliament and wealthy steel tycoon. “It is a great unifying factor.”

Legal battles over the flag

After decades of legal wrangling, Jindal has fought and won a number of battles: the right for citizens to fly the flag any day (2004), the right to fly the flag at night (2009), and, this February, the right to wear a flag lapel pin in Parliament.

International flag experts, known as vexillologists, say that India’s flag laws were among the world’s most restrictive. Singapore used to prevent citizens from flying the flag except on its National Day, but they also nixed the rule in 2004. Up until 1985, private citizens in Argentina could only fly a tricolor version of their national flag without the sun emblem.

Britain, the former colonial ruler of India, has also been loosening flag rules. Government buildings used to be allowed to fly the flag on 18 days of the year, mostly to mark royal events. The palace assented to lifting the restriction a decade back, but it’s only last year that the Union Jack began to fly daily from the government ministries up and down Whitehall.
